Honours for Canadore poverty reduction through education programs

The Nipissing and Indigenous Poverty Reduction through Education programs at Canadore College are receiving provincial recognition.

They’ve received an Award of Excellence in the Equality of Opportunity category.

The award recognizes college faculty and staff who have excelled at creating opportunities in post-secondary education for marginalized and underrepresented groups.

George Burton, Canadore President and CEO says the programs train, upskill and support low income students in their journey through post-secondary education to the workforce.

“Students come to Canadore from diverse backgrounds and experiences,” he says. “The [programs] are helping Canadore break the cycle of poverty.”

“The Indigenous Poverty Reduction in Education Program was designed to address the many barriers that exist for some of the Indigenous students prior, during and after their post-secondary education journey,” said Judy Manitowabi, Director of the First Peoples’ Centre and Indigenous Engagement.  “The FPC team has been instrumental in providing those additional supports needed for their success.”

More than 300 students have been supported through the programs since they launched in 2017.
