Hundreds attend 34th annual Canadore College Pow Wow

The 34th annual Canadore College Pow Wow was a resounding success.

That’s according to Canadore officials, who say an estimated 400 people filled the College Drive gymnasium on Feb. 4.

“The turnout was amazing,” said Gerald McComb, First Peoples’ Centre Cultural Advisor. “Many community members, singers, and dancers from out of town travelled to take part in the Pow Wow. They seemed to really enjoy themselves.”

Officials say the drummers, singers, and dancers came from as far away as Ottawa, Wikwemikoong, and Timmins and maintained a high energy level throughout the seven-hour event.

“They did an amazing job keeping the energy of the Pow Wow moving. Many dancers and drummers showed up to share their songs, dance styles, and stories,” said McComb. “I want to commend the committee and volunteers for working hard to make the Pow Wow happen and ensuring that everything ran smoothly.”

McComb says this year’s event could not accommodate all of the vendors who wanted to attend, so the organizers will be looking to try and find more space.

“People were happy to get together again for this Pow Wow after the pandemic prevented in-person gatherings,” said McComb. “Canadore College’s annual Pow Wow has been a popular gathering for the local community as well as neighbouring communities. To be able to come back was a joyful moment for many.”
