New apartments to help make ‘downtown a real people place again’

Changes are coming to the upper floors above Cecil’s and the Grande Event Centre on Main Street East.

John Lechlitner, president says the next phase of the redevelopment of their historic complex includes the creation of residential units.

“Our redevelopment will be just one more of the cornerstones of what is starting to take shape downtown,” he says. “We’re starting to see some new businesses open, some of the buildings have been sold and renovations are being done.  You just have to think about this as one more piece of making the downtown a real people place again.”

Lechlitner says the redevelopment includes 20-plus residential units that will primarily be one and two-bedroom.

“Most of the construction is all internal because we have three floors of building,” he says. “We’ve got 13,000 to 14,000 square feet of space upstairs that we’re going to be converting to nice apartments.  We’re hoping to start with some preliminary construction this fall.”

Lechlitner says they will be installing some new entrances and elevators too, so they’ll be using part of the Grande to accommodate the Cecil’s and Grande kitchen and storage during construction.

With the redevelopment finalized, he adds they’re now able to accept bookings again for the Grande Event Centre.

“We have both rooms open basically for the summer and then starting in the fall, and going forward, we have the large room [Ferguson] with a capacity of 170,” Lechlitner says.

He adds Cecil’s Brewhouse and Kitchen, the Map Room and the catering division all remain as is.
