‘Flames above the roof of the home’, Deputy Fire Chief Greg Saunders

A person was taken to hospital after a structure fire on Wednesday morning.

“I know there were some burns and some smoke inhalation,” says Deputy Fire Chief Greg Saunders,”I don’t know the extent of the injuries.”

North Bay Fire and Emergency Service got called to a home at 359 Rancier St. shortly after 9:30, with all three stations responding.

Saunders says when crews arrived, the flames were higher than the home.

“The gentleman was doing some welding in his garage,” he says. “Unfortunately, there were a number of flammable liquids in the garage and they caught fire very quickly and accelerated the fire. There’s significant damage to the home.”

The fire was contained to one of the semi-detached homes, though the neighbouring house suffered damage as well.

Saunders says the family will be displaced for a significant time due to damages.

Crews were still on the scene late this morning, making sure it was fully extinguished.

Saunders says his crews tamed the fire about half an hour after arriving.
