NBMCA sessions focus on development around wetlands and watercourses

Managing development projects in areas regulated by the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority (NBMCA) was the focus of a couple of conferences this week.

Wednesday’s half-day event was for municipal staff while another one on Tuesday was for construction contractors.

The Conservation Authority says the events focused on best management practices and permit applications for work around wetlands, watercourses, and steep slopes.

More than 20 local contractors gathered for the first session with 20 municipal councillors, public works and planning staff taking in Wednesday’s conference.

“We’re bringing together our municipal partners to share information relevant to the important work they may be planning in NBMCA-regulated areas in the coming year,” says Dave Britton, NBMCA Chair.

Officials say municipalities are required to consult with NBMCA and obtain a permit for any ditches, culverts, drains or other municipal road work if it is being undertaken within the Conservation Authority’s regulated area.  NBMCA staff will also review its new protocol which provides municipalities with an accelerated process for undertaking emergency work in regulated areas.

Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry staff were also on hand to provide information related to provincially-regulated areas.
