City’s Grow Our Canopy program back for a second year

A program that helps North Bay residents grow the city’s tree canopy is back for a second year.

Trees for Nipissing has teamed up with the City of North Bay to make 100 trees available for residential property owners to plant in their yards.

It’s called the Grow Our Canopy program.

Peggy Walsh Craig, Trees for Nipissing Chair, says last year’s inaugural offering was a success.

“It was fantastic last year,” she says. “The trees that we made available were all taken within seven hours and the pick-up time went very well too.  People were very enthusiastic about receiving trees this way.”

The cost is $15 for qualified residential property owners who successfully complete an online application form and prepay to reserve a tree.

Walsh Craig says six species of trees, in different sizes, are available.

“We have serviceberry which is the smallest one, it just grows about 20 feet high,” she says. “It’s one of the first trees to bloom in North Bay so it’s a very nice tree to have in your yard.  And then the tallest would be sugar maple.”

Applications are being accepted as of March 30.

Pick-up will be under the Gateway Arch at Lee Park in early May.
