Crews battle structure fire on Fisher Street

There were no reported injuries after a fire on the 1100 block of Fisher Street Thursday morning.

“Around 8 am we received a call for smoke and flame visible from this house,” says Chief Jason Whiteley. “When crews arrived on the scene we had a working fire in the kitchen area that has got into the walls.  There are three separate apartments in this building.”

As of 9 am, Whiteley says crews were still working on the fire on the second floor after it got into the walls and the attic.

“We’re looking at it possibly being a cooking fire, however until we do the final investigation, I’m not sure.  But, that’s what it appears to be right now.”

At last check, both lanes of Fisher Street heading downtown are blocked at Chippewa Street, in the area of the fire to allow crews to do their work.

Whiteley is asking drivers to help keep his firefighters safe after at least one vehicle crossed into the opposing lanes of traffic to get around the blocked area.

“It’s a very dynamic scene for us and we have people working around the trucks, in and out, they’re not necessarily paying attention when we block the road,” he says. “These people that keep bypassing our cones and our security perimeter are putting my firefighters in a lot of danger.”

There’s no word on a damage estimate from the fire as yet.
