Autism services at One Kids Place are benefiting from an event for car enthusiasts this weekend.
A car rally is being hosted by social service worker students at Canadore College.
“I love car rallies,” says Ashley Bowman, chair of the rain or shine event. “It’s a lot of fun overall and I thought it would be a really good opportunity for One Kids Place to start raising money for their camps. This year they have kind of run out of funds so they’ve needed extra support to send children to these summer camps.”
Bowman says she’s always wanted to help people and autism is personal for her, having grown up with someone on the spectrum and from teaching swimming lessons and running sensory swims for children with autism.
“When I heard about these autism summer camps I knew that it was something that I wanted to help. When the opportunity came to host this fundraiser I knew that that was what I wanted to do,” Bowman says.
Registration starts at 9:30 am on Saturday, April 15 at One Kids Place with the rally beginning at 10 am.
Bowman says the car rally is essentially a city-wide scavenger hunt with participants getting clues and taking photos of their destinations.
The rally, which includes a costume contest, wraps up at New Ontario Brewing with prizes and awards being handed out.
