Community and Recreation Centre project goes to tender

The tender has been issued for construction of North Bay’s new Community and Recreation Centre project on Lakeshore Drive.

Pre-qualified contractors have until June 14 to put in their submissions. “The new Community and Recreation Centre, which will replace the West Ferris Arena, will provide the community with improved recreational services and opportunities, including an additional ice pad to better meet demand,” states a release from the city.

Officials say the facility will be fully accessible and environmentally sustainable through a net-zero-carbon design.

It will offer two standard-size hockey rinks, a walking or running track, viewing areas, community space and more.

The city says there will also be 14 barrier-free team change rooms, including eight capable of converting into four enlarged change rooms.

Council approved going to tender by a 6-5 vote in mid-February, with some councillors saying moving to tender will give them the final cost, to make the ultimate decision to build, or not.

It has been previously estimated the project will cost about $52 million with $25.7 million coming from the federal government.
