April 28 is the National Day of Mourning

‘Mourn the Dead; Fight for the Living’.

That’s the theme for this National Day of Mourning.

“This year, Canada’s unions are marking the Day of Mourning by encouraging and empowering workers to know their rights at work, use the health and safety tools at their disposal and defend our health and safety wins in the workplace,” says Henri Giroux. President of the North Bay and District Labour Council.

He adds every worker should come home safely.

“As work and workplaces have changed over the recent years, we are supporting workers in their roles to create a culture of safety and prevention, and demanding employers and governments to respect their duty to create safe work,” says Giroux.

A ceremony is taking place at 5 pm at North Bay City Hall with guest speaker Ahmad Gaied, Treasurer of the Ontario Federation of Labour.

Mayor Peter Chirico will also be there to read a proclamation.
