Local Special Olympics athletes are benefiting from what officials say was a successful Hometown Run for Youth Special Olympics.
$18,000 was raised in the May 7 event, which featured 10 km and 5 km runs as well as a 1 km family fun run/walk.
“The community really came through for us,” says Lisa O’Kane, race co-director. “It was wonderful seeing over 160 runners come out to support an organization they believe in. We were hoping this inaugural event could be a launching pad to raising money every year for our local special Olympic athletes and we now know that this can be a reality.”
The funds raised will help sponsor local Special Olympics athletes so their fees and registration costs can be covered throughout the upcoming season.
