Groups hosting barbecue for the unsheltered on Sunday

A barbecue for the homeless and anyone in need of a meal is taking place at the waterfront on Sunday afternoon.

Advocates for the Homeless Society is one of the groups involved, with officials saying their goal is to promote a long-term housing and services solution to the unsheltered population in North Bay.

The AIDS Committee of North Bay and Area is also involved in the barbecue.

Stacey Mayhall, Executive Director says there are initiatives happening locally, but they’re also happy to support ideas coming from community members.

“This is an initiative really to build community and meet each other,” she says. “To have a chance to talk with each other about what’s going on and what kinds of solutions we can work on together.”

The society is requesting donations in the form of grocery gift cards or cash and is gathering supplies ahead of Sunday’s barbecue.

Officials say the bandshell area is being booked for noon to 6 pm on May 21, and they’ll be serving food until supplies run out.

Local businesses, grocery stores or individuals looking to provide donations can contact [email protected] or call/text 705-477-5634.
