Residents helping grow the city’s tree canopy

Just over 100 trees were quickly sold out as a part of the second annual Grow Our Canopy program in North Bay.

Trees for Nipissing and the City of North Bay teamed up to offer low-cost trees to residential property owners again this year.

Officials say many people paid more than the $15 cost for a tree just to support the program, including one resident who made a $100 donation to honour her late husband and his long tradition of planting trees every year.

“101 trees may not sound like much, but Trees for Nipissing has been planting trees in North Bay for almost 20 years and we intend to Grow Our Canopy for generations to come,” says Peggy Walsh Craig, Trees for Nipissing Chair. “The need to cool our homes, curtail flooding and provide bird habitat increases every year. Thanks to the Mayor, Council and city staff who are helping make North Bay a greener and healthier place to live and work.”

A variety of trees were available including sugar maple, red oak and serviceberry.
