The Amazing Drag Race is back this weekend.
OUTLoud North Bay is hosting the 2nd annual event from 10 am to 8 pm at the waterfront on Saturday.
“It’s a full day of family fun,” says Seth Compton, Executive Director. “It is a fundraiser for OUTLoud North Bay. This is going to help keep our doors open.”
Along with the 5 km walk/run to Lee Park and back to the Kiwanis Bandshell, there’s a skate jam, drag performances, vendors market, live music and more.
“For us, it’s about celebrating Pride, inclusion and diversity. We want to bring the community together,” says Compton.
Participants are encouraged to dress in drag, but it’s not a requirement.
When asked about responding to critics of drag events, Compton says education is key.
“For generations, we’ve only been taught so many things. As a person, it’s our responsibility to continue learning,” he says.
Compton says there are misconceptions about drag too.
“I think that people have that perception that it’s only gay men. But we have straight folks dressing up and entertaining as well,” he says. “We also do it in different stages. There’s obviously adult entertainment and then we have drag story time where we’re teaching kids about inclusion and diversity, having their feelings or identity validated.”
