It’s the last week of school and the North Bay Police Service is offering up tips to keep everyone safe this summer.
With children outside more enjoying the summer months, police remind drivers to focus on the road and be aware of their surroundings.
They also say distracted driving is a serious offence and can come with a fine of $615 to $3,000, three to six demerit points and a 3-day to 30-day driving suspension, depending on the offence.
Careless driving charges can also be laid if motorists endanger the lives of others by driving while distracted by actions such as eating, grooming, smoking, reading, or reaching for objects within your vehicle.
Police also say bicycles are considered vehicles that belong on the road, with cyclists reminded they need to travel with the flow of traffic and follow all applicable laws.
Some laws are different for kids on bikes. Police say cyclists under the age of 10 can travel on sidewalks while cyclists under the age of 18 must wear an approved bicycle helmet.
For pedestrian safety, police say walk on the lefthand side of the road, facing traffic, if there’s no sidewalk.
