UPDATE: Conservation Authority issues flood warning

A flood warning has been issued by the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority for urban creeks in the City of North Bay, including Chippewa Creek.

“Intense rainfall through the NBMCA watershed has caused the levels on Chippewa Creek to
increase this morning,” stated David Ellingwood, NBMCA Flood Duty Officer. “Similar to
yesterday, water levels today have risen by one metre in a short time.” With the heavy rainfall warning and rain forecast to continue into the evening (June 27), there is potential for further changes in the water level on urban creeks in the North Bay area into tomorrow (June 28).

The Conservation Authority is advising area residents and visitors to stay away from the creeks during this time of high flows, monitor the conditions and take proper precautions.

Officials say if you have a flood emergency, contact your municipality.

Residents in unincorporated townships can contact the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry – North Bay District.

Staff with the Conservation Authority will continue to monitor weather and watershed conditions.

Environment Canada has two weather alerts for our area.

They include a special weather statement with the potential for significant rainfall amounts because of slowmoving showers.

The air quality statement also continues with the weather agency saying smoke plumes from forest fires in Quebec and northeastern Ontario will continue to affect the area, resulting in deteriorated air quality.
