North Bay calls for recycling of mattresses

North Bay council wants mattresses included as recyclable objects.  The resolution follows a presentation from the girls at Sunset Park School who make the point mattresses are 100 percent recyclable.

The girls make up the Lego Robotics team and finished second in a local competition behind the Sunset boys.  The youngsters told council that mattress foam, for example, can be used as insulation.

This weekend, the girls take their presentation to the all provincial championships in Oshawa.  About 1,200 mattresses a year end up at the local landfill site.

To give that perspective, if the discarded mattresses that end up at the local landfill were stacked on top of one another, they would be almost as tall as the CN Tower.   The Sunset Park girls came up with the recycling idea as a means to divert recyclable goods from the landfill so it has a longer life.
