City police investigating the exploitation of illegal immigrants

The North Bay Police Service is investigating the exploitation of illegal immigrants.

The service says last Friday (July 21), officers responded to a report of suspected illegal immigrants being exploited as part of a driveway paving scam.

According to police officials, a suspect claiming to represent a company called “Emerald Paving” went door-to-door in the area of Tower Drive and Little Down Lane, offering to repave residential driveways for a cost between $4,000 and $12,000 to be paid in cash with some residents paying the amount.

After officers attended the area, the suspect selling the service fled and they arrested three workers who were later identified as Mexican nationals, illegally residing and working in Canada. They were later transferred to the Canada Border Services Agency.

The service says the suspect is still on the run, and the investigation is ongoing, adding they will not be releasing a description at this time.

If you have recently hired the company or one matching its description, or if you have any additional information, you’re asked to call the North Bay Police Service at 705-497-5555 or Crime Stoppers.

City police say repaving a residential driveway requires proper permits from the city and businesses are required to be properly licensed in order to operate,
