Two new community safety zones are coming to North Bay.
One is on Lakeshore Drive by the Omischl Sports Complex and Sunset Park School.
It means the speed limit, which is currently 50 km/h, will be reduced to 40 km/h in that area.
“While the work is being done down there and the temporary lights are by Omischl it is amazing what the difference is,” says Councillor Lana Mitchell. “How much easier it is to drive there and to operate, people crossing the road with bikes and families. I think it’s well deserved. Since I live down there, I know that the speeding and what goes on there, any reduction we can do is good.”
The other zone is by Cassellholme on Olive and High Streets.
“The designation of Community Safe Zones increases driver awareness of public safety and help reduce aggressive driving and speeding in areas that have higher designations of folks that are vulnerable,” says Councillor Justine Mallah, Chair of Community Services Committee.
Council approved the changes after staff received requests from the public and North Bay Police Services to designate the two areas as Community Safety Zones.

Still at city hall, a report involving the future of the Community and Recreation Centre project has been referred to committee for further discussion.
Staff compiled the report with three options for council to consider after the tender process saw the cost of the project come in significantly higher than estimated.
The lowest bid was just over $69 million.
Two options would cancel the tender and redesign the building with one also reviewing the building’s function.
Option number three would award the tender.
