City property purchase involves community safety and well-being

The city is in the process of buying property on Cassells Street, right next door to The Gathering Place.

Mayor Peter Chirico says it’s a strategic acquisition and is part of the city’s strategy to address community safety and well-being priorities.

He says the city plans to collaborate with a variety of community partners to develop a business case for the effective use of the property.

“It’s in its initial stages, the acquisition is the first part of that case,” he says. “We’ve got sort of a draft business case but we’re going to build it with the partners to make sure we can address some of those issues that we’re seeing in our community right now.”

Chirico adds more details will be shared once that business case has been completed.

“This is part of that [Community Safety and Well-being] plan,” he says. “As we move forward with it, we certainly will release more details as to what community partners are going to be involved with it and how we’re going to work it on a go-forward basis.”

Council has approved up to $310,000 for the purchase and related costs.
