Future of Canadian golf teeing off in North Bay next week

156 of the best junior golfers in Canada are hitting the links in North Bay next week.

From Aug. 14-17, the 2023 Canadian Junior Boys Championship is being played over four rounds at the North Bay Golf and Country Club.

This year’s field, which includes five 2023 NextGen tournament winners, is vying for the Silver Cup.

“North Bay Golf & Country Club is a classic Stanley Thompson design and will provide a tough but fair test for the country’s best junior golfers,” says Golf Canada Tournament Director Daniel Suppa. “The Host Club committee at North Bay and its members are extremely proud to host this prestigious event. In working with the staff at North Bay and their tournament committee, everyone involved is passionate and committed to providing a world-class event for all participants travelling to the tournament.”

He says this event will be a career highlight for the competitors.

“It’s an elite competition for these golfers,” says Suppa. “They circle it on the calendar at the beginning of the year and they’re trying to make sure they qualify and can compete this week. And have it on their resume.’

The event also includes a U16 Juvenile division and an inter-provincial team competition.

Spectators are free and are welcome over the course of the four-day event.

“The entire membership and professional staff are extremely excited to showcase our Northern hospitality and our beautiful property to the best junior golfers in the country,” said Jeff Mancini, Director of Golf and General Manager, North Bay Golf and Country Club. “What our course lacks in distance it makes up for with narrow corridors, challenging lies and undulating green complexes that require your attention on all putts.”

The lone northern competitor is Brody Dagenais from Timmins.

Reigning Canadian Open champion Nick Taylor won the junior championship in 2006.
