City hosting mattress recycling drop-off event

If you have an old mattress or box spring you’re looking to get rid of, the city is hosting a one-day recycling drop-off event on Saturday.

It’s taking place from 8:30 am to 4 pm at the North Bay Public Works Yard at 1399 Franklin Street.

Officials say the event is only open to residents and any size of mattress or box spring can be dropped off.

The fee is $25 per piece, to offset the price of the mattress recycling program, with only credit or debit being accepted.

“The creation of the mattress recycling program was prompted by a council presentation in 2016 by a FIRST Lego robotics team which found that an estimated 100 mattresses, which are 100 per cent recyclable, were going to the landfill each month,” states a release.

Since the start of the program, the city says more than 28,300 mattresses and box springs have been diverted from the landfill site.
