Fire prevention week focuses on cooking safety

‘Cooking safety starts with you. Pay attention to fire prevention’ is the theme for this Fire Prevention Week.

Officials with North Bay Fire and Emergency Services say the campaign works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take when cooking to keep themselves and those around them safe.

“Year after year, cooking remains the leading cause of home fires, accounting for approximately half of all home fires,” says Fire Chief Jason Whiteley.  “These numbers tell us that there is still much work to do when it comes to better educating the public about ways to stay safe when cooking.”

Safety tips being offered include;

  • Watch what you heat. Always keep a close eye on what you are cooking. Set a timer to remind you that you are cooking.
  • Never throw water on a grease fire
  • Have a “kid- and pet-free zone” of at least 3 feet (1 meter) around the stove or grill and anywhere else hot food or drink is prepared or carried.

North Bay Fire is also collecting non-perishable food items and donations for the North Bay Food Bank.

After crews were set up at Parker’s Your Independent Grocer on Wednesday, they’ll be at Sobey’s from 11 am to 6 pm on Thursday.
