City survey focused on enhancing road safety

Local residents are being asked for their thoughts on enhancing safety on city streets and sidewalks.

A road safety strategy is being developed to reduce the number of fatal and serious collisions in the city and create safer roads for everyone.

The city says there are more than 800 collisions every year on roadways in North Bay, with 100 resulting in serious injury or death.

An online survey is now available on the city’s website with people able to share their insights on different modes of travel, including walking, cycling, driving and public transit, along with issues like distracted driving, speeding and pedestrian and cyclist collisions.

The deadline is November 20 and officials say it’ll take about five minutes to complete the survey.

“Led by the engineering consulting firm CIMA+, the development of the strategy will include a review of the City’s existing transportation infrastructure standards and will rely on various resources to identify potential safety concerns within the city, including consultations with the public and stakeholders,” states a release. “Stay tuned for further information regarding the first in-person consultation session, scheduled for Nov. 22.”

The strategy is expected to come to council in the summer of 2024 and once in place, it will guide decisions on road design, traffic regulation, signage, and potential safety measures like automated speed enforcement.
