Water safety statement issued for urban creeks in North Bay

All of the recent rain has led to a couple of water-related statements from the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority (NBMCA).

A water safety statement has been issued for urban creeks in the City of North Bay while a flood outlook has been issued for the Mattawa River below the Hurdman Dam, and the Town of Mattawa.

“Water levels in the Mattawa area are above normal for this time of year, in response to rain that fell over the Thanksgiving weekend,” says Angela Mills, NBMCA Flood Duty Officer. “Flows from upstream dams on the Ottawa River have been increasing over the past week. Significant rain is forecast between now and the weekend (through October 29) and these water levels are expected to increase. Urban creeks in the City of North Bay will respond quickly to periods of intense rain. Flooding may be possible in Mattawa in response to the forecasted rain, but flooding is not expected elsewhere at this time.”

Along with keeping children and pets away from watercourses and shorelines, the public is being advised to monitor conditions as they develop and take proper precautions during times of high flows.

NBMCA says the statements are in place until Monday, Oct. 30 at 4 pm.
