Council asks for ongoing door-to-door mail delivery

North Bay councillor Mac Bain says replacing door-to-door mail delivery with super boxes creates a host of problems.  Bain’s motion not to cancel home delivery got unanimous support from his colleagues Monday night.  He says one issue is where do the community mail boxes go because many people won’t like them on their property.  Bain adds the super boxes will be tough on people with mobility issues and seniors especially if they have to go through snow to get their mail.  Councillor Mark King has a community mail box on his street and he says on occasion he’s shoveled snow from the box to get his mail.   In addition to asking Canada Post not to cancel door-to-door delivery, city council took the extra step of saying the Crown Corporation should diversify.  A union spokesman for Canada Post, Keith Bradford, suggested postal banking as a means to diversification, something that’s now going on in several European countries.
