Hometown Run for Youth Special Olympics returns this spring

The second annual Hometown Run for Youth Special Olympics in North Bay is set for May 5

There will be 1 km, 5 km and 10 km events starting at the North Bay Museum.

Lisa O’Kane, race co-director, says the inaugural event last year was a success both financially and with raising awareness about Youth Special Olympics programming locally.

The run has also secured a major sponsor with Assante Wealth Management pledging $5000 annually for the next five years.

“They are athletes,” says O’Kane. “They deserve and they need what every athlete needs. They need equipment. They need space and they need opportunity and what this money does for us is provide some of that.”

On top of the financial support, Chris Winrow, Assante Financial Advisor and Branch co-owner, says their staff will also be volunteering with Youth Special Olympics.

“It’s lovely to be able to write a cheque and give financial support,” he says. “But you can see these volunteers are doing an awful lot of work and the more volunteers they have the more programming they can offer to the kids and it sort of steamrolls. It’s a combination win for us.”

Funds raised through the Hometown Run go towards sponsoring local Special Olympics Athletes so their fees and registration costs can be covered throughout the upcoming competition season.
