Labour Council sees change at the top

A change of leadership is coming to the North Bay and District Labour Council.

After 18 years as president, Henri Giroux has resigned from the position.

“I decided it’s time to move on and let somebody else run the show,” he says, noting he’s been on the labour council for 44 years.

He says highlights over the years include organizing the annual Day of Mourning, which is coming up on April 28, and the annual Labour Day Picnic.

“One of the big highlights that we had was organizing the first Pride parade, the biggest one we had in North Bay, in 2017 where over a thousand people attended,” Giroux says. “It was quite an accomplishment for the Labour Council.”

He also says working with the public and the community to enhance labour issues is another highlight.

Giroux says he’ll enjoy retirement but also says healthcare issues around privatization are still a big concern for him.

“I am the co-chair of the health coalition and I want to continue to do that,” he says. “Those are issues where it’s affecting our kids and our grandkids and our great grandkids, that we never had to pay for our healthcare for years and years.”

Giroux says the labour council will elect a new president next month.
