City fire crews continued to douse hot spots early Wednesday morning after a massive fire at Stradwicks Carpet One on Brule Street.

The call came in just before 10 pm Tuesday with flames continuing to shoot through the roof of the complex late into the night.

Platoon Chief Steve Denomme says they encountered heavy flames, fire and smoke when they arrived on the scene.

“[It had] actually broken through the centre to the rear part of the building and flames were probably 25-30 feet high,” he says. “Once we determined there wasn’t anybody inside we decided to have a defensive attack.”

He says crews also worked to protect a fuel depot across the street.

“One of our issues was to make sure none of the embers and sparks didn’t create any more problems for us,” Denomme says.

He also says extra firefighters were brought in to battle the blaze.

“We brought in two code yellows. Two extra crews,” Denomme says. “One stayed at the main hall and the second came here and aided. We actually had four crews on site. Stations 1, 2 and 3 and a code yellow.”

Denomme says there were no injuries and fire prevention will be investigating the cause.

The building is a total loss.

Franklin Street was closed for several hours overnight but is back open.

A huge plume of smoke was visible from various parts of the city late into the night on Tuesday.
