Council awards McKeown Ave reconstruction tender

Get ready for road work on McKeown Avenue.

Council has approved the $9.5 million reconstruction tender for a stretch of the roadway between Cartier Street and the roundabout at Gormanville Road.

Work is expected to begin early this summer.

Councillor Justine Mallah, chair of community services, says she’s looking forward to the project.

“I personally have, and I’m sure many of my fellow city council members have, received concerns about the current state,” she says. “Widening McKeown to four lanes will help with traffic flow and increase safety with new traffic lights providing controlled access for pedestrians and cyclists. “

Traffic lights will be installed at the intersection with McNamara Street. Improvements also include a multi-use path from Gormanville to A&W with plans to extend it to Airport Road in the future.

Council also approved a $1.1 million contract for professional engineering services for the sidewalk program.

“I believe this will increase the walkability of our city and increase accessibility and safety along our transit routes,” says Mallah.

Construction of the various sections of sidewalks is expected to start this year with the final section completed in 2031.
