Council committee approves transit fare increase

A proposed increase in transit rates has been approved by a council committee.

If approved by full council, it would be the first increase in nine years.

Cash fares and single ride passes would go up a quarter to $3.25.

Monthly passes would increase between $5 and $7 while a day pass would go up by a Loonie to $9.

An amendment to start the increase on September 1, instead of July 1, was approved at Monday night’s special committee meeting.

Also on the agenda was a $16 rental fee (3-hour block) for all organized or community play at the pickleball courts in Bourke Park.

The issue remains on the committee file until more details on when the courts will be resurfaced is known.

Still at City Hall, another council committee approved a rezoning request involving a 42-unit stacked townhouse complex on Golf Club Road.

Some area residents oppose the plan, citing increased traffic, a change in the type of housing for the property and more.
