DNSSAB expanding renovation program to create more affordable housing

A residential home renovation program is being expanded locally to help create more affordable housing units.

The District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board (DNSSAB) says eligible homeowners can get up to $50,000 to create an additional dwelling unit in their primary residence or on their property.

Officials say homeowners will then provide an affordable rent to an eligible tenant of their choosing during the term of the forgivable loan.

“The recent Housing Needs and Supply Study showed us that all Nipissing District municipalities need more affordable units and this is one way to begin addressing that need, particularly for single units,” says Mark King, DNNSAB Chair.

He adds the program will benefit those needing affordable rental units, existing homeowners, and area communities.

“This would apply right across the region so South Algonquin and Temagami, all the smaller communities that are partners in DNSSAB are also part of this project,” King says.

In the first year of the program, projects will be targeted in each municipality that allows additional dwelling units, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Contact DNSSAB by email: [email protected] or by phone: 705-474-2151 Ext. 45587 to learn more about the program.
