Ontario helping area seniors stay fit, healthy and active

Seniors Active Living Centres across the province, including locally, are getting additional provincial funding.

Up to $15 million is going to more than 300 centres.

The province says that’s an increase of about 10% compared to last year.

A majority of senior centre programs will get a funding increase from about $43,000 to up to $50,000.

Money will be used to deliver a variety of programs such as book clubs, fitness classes, health and wellness services, social groups, and other special events.

“Senior Active Living Centres help build healthier, safer communities by providing a community hub for older adults,’’ says Raymond Cho, Minister for Seniors and Accessibility.

Cho will be in the area on Friday, joining Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli at the Callander Elderly Person’s Centre, located at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 445.

Other area centres include Golden Age Clubs in North Bay and Sturgeon Falls, Club Action 50+ in Corbeil, Mattawa Senior Citizens Club, South River Friendly Circle Senior Citizens and Sundridge Happy Gang.

The province says more types of organizations are now able to deliver senior centre programming, with a call for proposals to open later this summer.
