Get ready for over a year of road work on McKeown Avenue.
The expansion of the roadway to four lanes from Cartier Street to Gormanville Road will be starting next week.
City officials say the contractor is mobilizing and the first phase of the $9.6 million project will focus on Gormanville to McNamara, where traffic lights will be installed.
“One lane of traffic in each direction is to be maintained for the duration of the project,” states a release from the city. “There will be instances where this will not be feasible, and traffic will be temporarily down to one lane for both directions or detoured as required until the work is complete.”
Drivers are advised to leave extra time for travel in this area or take an alternative route to their destination where possible.
The project also includes a new multi-use path on the south side of the road, extending from Gormanville Road, past Cartier Street to the intersection at A&W.
The city says the multi-use path is expected to be extended in the future to connect with Airport Road.
Construction is targeted for completion in October 2025.
Funded in part by the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP): Rural and Northern Stream, the provincial and federal governments will contribute up to approximately $4.2 million toward the project.
McKeown Avenue expansion to 4 lanes starts this month. The contractor is expected to mobilize this week, and construction begins the week of June 17. The project will include a new multi-use path on the south side. Details: https://t.co/FHjOzRig0O pic.twitter.com/4a4Tld3xU2
