Remembering a local war hero in England

Officials in England are marking the 80th anniversary of a plane crash that claimed the lives of several Canadian air force members, including one from North Bay next month.

Military documents show flying officer John Alexander Glenn, an air gunner, was 19 when he died in the Halifax MZ311 bomber crash on Aug. 26,1944.

He was the son of Alexander and Nora Glenn of Ferris, Ontario.

The Royal Air Forces Association says the plane was returning to its base in York from a mine laying operation off the coast of western France when it crashed in Cheltenham, England.

A piece of the plane was found in August 2020 and a memorial was installed, with the official dedication taking place next month.

Glenn’s grandnephew, Ed Stortz, a police officer in Windsor, says he and his family will be there.

He says they also plan to visit Glenn’s final resting place at Brookwood Military Cemetary, about 50 km from London, England.

Glenn’s name is inscribed on the Memorial Wall behind the Cenotaph in Memorial Park, at First Avenue West and Ferguson Street in North Bay.
