Applications being accepted to new sport and rec infrastructure fund

The city is interested in learning more about the province’s new Community Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Fund.

Vic Fedeli, Nipissing MPP says $200 million is being made available to help communities revitalize existing community sport and recreation infrastructure and build new facilities.

“By investing in new and improved sport and recreation facilities through the 2024 Budget: Building a Better Ontario, we will make it easier for people to create healthier, more active lifestyles, make sports more accessible, and help more communities across the region host sporting events and competitions,” says Fedeli.

Applications are open to municipalities, Indigenous communities, non-profit organizations and (for new builds only) for-profit organizations, through two streams.

One involves repairing and upgrading existing sports and recreation facilities while the other is for building ‘new and transformative’ facilities.

Eligible new projects will receive up to $10 million and must be completed no later than March 31, 2027.

MyNorthBayNow.com reached out to the city to see if there are plans to apply to the fund for the new Community and Recreation Centre project.

“The City is reviewing the criteria of this fund, along with other programs, to determine eligibility and how to best maximize our funding opportunities,” says Gord Young, communications officer with the city.

The new build will be the focus of an upcoming special committee meeting of council, which has yet to be scheduled.

Earlier this month, Council voted to hold a special committee meeting to receive an update on the project from staff and the project developer.
