If you know of a local Canadian WWII veteran, Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli wants to hear from you.
He’s looking to honour their contributions to our country and province by nominating them for the King Charles III Coronation Medal.
“Veterans Affairs has told us there are five. But they can’t tell us who they are,” Fedeli says, pointing to privacy laws.
With diminishing numbers of Canadian WWII veterans, he says those who were alive as of May 6, 2023 can be nominated.
“This will likely be the last time we have to do these things,” Fedeli says. “Knowing that it’s open for those who have died recently will allow people like Ralph Diegel to be awarded it posthumously.”
Diegel passed away in March at the age of 97.
Pat Kenzie Diegel says her husband was rather modest when it came to the various honours he received.
“He would almost likely say there are a lot of people that deserve it more than he does,” she says. “I think it’s wonderful. He was very proud of his service because he started in 1943, and he remained in the reserve until 1965.”
