A city initiative that educates local students about waste diversion is an award winner.
The Waste Diversion Outreach Program won the Municipal Waste Association’s Gold Promotion and Education Award earlier this year.
Led by Victoria Thomas, Environmental Control Officer, the program included visits to 44 classrooms with interactive presentations, real-life examples, and fun games for students to help them learn about North Bay’s waste diversion programs and the impact they can make in their community.
As part of the program students created posters highlighting essential waste diversion messages.
Each week a winning poster in the Spotlight Contest was showcased on the city’s social media channels.
“We are proud of the work done to involve our youth in waste management practices and to promote environmental stewardship in North Bay,” says Councillor Lana Mitchell, Chair of Infrastructure and Operations.
The city received the top award in the ‘Surprise Us’ category, which recognizes an innovative and unique promotion and education project.
