Lakers drop national quarterfinal in penalties and Troops win in Windsor

At the USports national women’s soccer championship, the Nipissing Lakers lost 4-2 on penalty kicks to the Cape Breton Capers in their quarterfinal match on Thursday.

Nipissing fought back from one goal deficits twice during the game on goals from Jessica Emmerton and Hanna Neville.

The OUA silver medalists will play host Dalhousie in the consolation semifinals Friday afternoon (12:30 pm ET).

In the OHL, the North Bay Battalion won 5-4 in Windsor Thursday night, securing two points against the number three team in the CHL weekly Top 10 rankings.

Captain Owen Van Steensel scored two goals, including the game winner, halting the Troops’ four game losing skid.

Andrew LeBlanc, Lirim Amidovski and Ryder Carey also scored for North Bay, backstopped by 22 saves from goaltender Charlie Larocque.

North Bay’s western road swing continues Friday night in London against another top team in the league.

The Knights are ranked fourth in the CHL weekly Top 10 rankings.
