Battalion and local CMHA host mental health awareness game

Mental health awareness and suicide prevention takes to the ice Thursday night at Boart Longyear Memorial Gardens.

The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) North Bay & District is teaming up with the North Bay Battalion as the Troops play the Soo Greyhounds at 7 pm.

Along with a moment of remembrance for those lives lost to suicide, fans can learn more about the association’s services and programs, the upcoming Push-Up Challenge, Chat4Chad, and more.

The game is part of the Talk Today program, an ongoing Ontario Hockey League-wide mental health awareness campaign.

Officials say since launching in 2014, Talk Today has supported and addressed the mental health needs of thousands of people in the hockey community, providing training to help to create a culture of openness within athlete support networks.

“CMHA North Bay and District is proud to partner with the Battalion to provide the players with ongoing training, education and support throughout the season,” says Mary Davis, Chief Executive Officer. “Game night is our opportunity to extend that same support to the fans, show the community what we stand for, and encourage them to seek help when they need it.”

Battalion officials say they’re thrilled to continue the partnership.

“We have seen such incredible benefits with the mental health and wellness of our own players,” says Adam Dennis, Battalion President & Director of Hockey Operations.  “The education they receive has given them tools for their own well-being and has helped raise awareness in their own personal networks at school and at home. We look forward to showing our gratitude and support for those in need and hope you can come out and join us for a fun night at the rink.”

Along with a ceremonial puck drop, Thursday’s game includes door prizes and fundraising for CMHA North Bay and District.
