Trojans Parade for Cancer takes place Tuesday

Expect to see hundreds of students clad in green heading to the waterfront on Tuesday.

That’s the new date of the Trojans Parade for Cancer, after it was postponed by weather last week.

Teacher Mark Robertson says the parade has been a tradition at West Ferris Secondary School for three decades.

“It started 32 years ago but we lost a couple of years because of COVID,” he says. “We have raised over half a million dollars so far.  The funds raised now go to the North Bay Regional Health Centre Foundation, so all the funds stay local.  Last year we raised $50,000 and we’re hoping to do the same this year.”

Student Kara Spraggett says some of her family members have passed away from cancer, while she too has had a cancer scare.

“It’s a very prominent thing in my life,” she says.  “I just really want to help and donate because it’s going to the hospital in North Bay and it’s so close to home.”

Officials say this year, the parade is raising funds to help purchase a state-of-the-art contrast injector for mammography at the health centre.

They say the equipment improves the quality of imaging, allowing radiologists to detect and diagnose breast cancer earlier.

While students were fundraising in the community, donations can also be made online on the NBRHC Foundation website.

Along with the parade, there will be games, teachers being pied in the face, and more.
