State of emergency lifted in Bonfield

The Township of Bonfield has lifted the state of emergency.

It had been declared after the severe weather on June 21 washed out, flooded and closed several roads in the community.

In a post on social media late Monday afternoon, officials said ‘road crews are 90% recovered from the storm’.

Some work still remains and a few roads are closed, with some impacted by rain this past weekend.

The municipality says public works crews will continue to touch up various roads, adding nearly every road needs to be graded.

”The emergency has ended, but please know that staff will continue to repair the roads, and we will begin the process of putting together a funding application to the province,” states the township. “We are starting to get reports of private property damage, for example, flooded basements. There is a Disaster Relief Fund for Ontarians. If you experience damage to your property, there may be a rebate fund available to you in the form of reimbursement. Please reach out to the office to learn more.”

Officials are thanking the many local contractors, neighbouring communities and Bonfield residents for their support.

The township office is closed on July 1, with Canada Day celebrations taking place at Kaibuskong Park.

Activities start at 5 pm with the bike decorating contest, a BBQ hosted by the mayor and council, games, live music, and more.

Fireworks are planned for dusk.
