May sees spike in break and enters in North Bay

May saw a drop in crime in North Bay for the same time a year ago except where break and enters are involved.

In 2018 the city saw 25 breaks ins but that jumped this past May to 41.

Deputy Police Chief Michael Daze says from time to time a spike will occur and there isn’t a main reason for it.

“We do look for causes for spikes,” Daze said.

“We’ll see often in a lot of different stats ebbs and flows that come through.”

Areas that saw big drops were sexual assaults, 4 compared to 16 the previous May and mischief incidents where last year in May there were 43 cases and this past May saw 12.

Daze points out assaults were down.

In May police responded to 22 instances of assault while they responded to 30 incidents the same time last year.

Theft under $5,000 also took a bit of a dive in May with 95 thefts compared to 135 the previous May.

Drug charges dropped slightly as well with 9 laid in May compared to 13 last year in May.

The number of robberies and stolen vehicles were the same with one robbery in each May and 7 vehicles stolen while there were no cases of theft over $5,000 this past May while at the same time last year, police had one case on their hands.
