Handgun, suspected drugs and fraudulent prescriptions seized by police

Two Ottawa residents are facing over a dozen charges each after North Bay Police responded to reports of fraudulent prescriptions attempting to be passed at several local pharmacies.

Police say as officers arrived on the scene of a local pharmacy on July 23, the suspects fled in a vehicle, nearly striking a pedestrian and colliding with a parked car.

The vehicle was located nearby with the suspects both arrested.

Police say several items were seized after a search of the vehicle, including a loaded 9 mm handgun, suspected drugs, fraudulent prescriptions and identification cards.

Charges laid include possession of a firearm, identity theft and uttering threats.

The two accused were held in custody pending a bail hearing.

“This investigation highlights the good work our officers do on a regular basis and the dangers they face” says Inspector of Operations Jeff Warner. “Not only did these two individuals attempt to flee the area in a vehicle creating dangerous conditions for the public and our officers, a loaded handgun was located within the vehicle.”

The North Bay Police Service is thanking the business owners and their staff for their diligence in recognizing fraudulent activity and contacting police in a timely manner.
