The Nipissing Violence Against Women Coordinating Committee (VAWCC) says the time to raise flags and read proclamations about Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is long gone.
The committee is once again calling on Council in North Bay to take meaningful action and declare IPV an epidemic.
That may happen at a special council meeting on Monday night.
A councillor motion looks to have council declare both IPV and violence against women are epidemic.
The renewed call from the committee comes after the deaths of five people, including three children, in Sault Ste. Marie this week.
Police in the Sault say the deceased offender had been involved in Intimate Partner investigations in the past.
“The VAWCC again urges the North Bay City Council and the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit to step up and take transformative action towards preventing [Intimate Partner Violence] and supporting victims/survivors,” reads a release. “Tragedies such as the mass shooting in the Sault are sadly not rare in our Province. 46 femicides have occurred as of September in Ontario.”
The North Bay Police Services Board recently passed a motion declaring IPV an epidemic.
Sault Police can confirm the offender has been involved in Intimate Partner investigations in the past.
Detectives are following up on all leads as the investigation is ongoing. (4/4)
