NNDSB rescinds motion approving Chippewa renaming process

A previous motion from the Near North District School Board approving the renaming process at Chippewa Secondary School has been rescinded.

“In order to have the discussions…we need to rescind the Dec. 2022 motion,” says Trustee Louise Sargent, who filed the notice of motion to have the decision pulled back.

The board says the motion to rescind required two-thirds support and was passed.

This after discussion earlier this fall on another notice of motion involving the committee’s work.

“Board Chair Erika Lougheed noted that two sets of directives could not be in place concurrently, as the proposed motion appeared to conflict with a motion passed by the board in Dec. 2022,” states the board highlights of the Oct. 10 meeting.

Over the past year, work on the renaming included a survey for potential new names.

In April, the Chippewa Renaming Committee said it was pleased with the number of suggestions received.

Officials added they were also aware of the suggestion to keep the name as Chippewa and acknowledged that many emotions and opinions accompany any school name change.

Work was later paused with the board updating its School Openings, Closing and Consolidation Administrative Guideline to “more closely reflect mandates in the Human Rights Code”.
