(Update) Early morning structure fire on Cartier Street

There were no injuries after an early morning structure fire on the 200 block of Cartier Street.

City fire crews were dispatched just before 1 am and had the fire under control in about 20 minutes.

Chief Jason Whiteley says the residence is a semi-detached home and was vacant at the time as it was under renovations, adding people in the neighbouring unit self-evacuated before fire services arrived.

“Fire crews ensured that both units were clear of occupants and pets, and cleared smoke in the adjacent unit as well,” he says. “The fire started in a closet area in the basement and burned through the first floor. The fire has been deemed accidental and possibly started with the improper storage of painting materials.”

Damage is estimated at $30,000.
