Construction on the city’s new all-wheel park is underway in the downtown waterfront area.
Officials gathered Friday for the ground-breaking on the site, behind the city’s transit terminal and multi-use courts.
“This has been 30 years in planning,” says Mayor Peter Chirico. “We had skate parks all over the city at different locations. Now it’s going to be centralized. The construction is well underway. Hopefully we’ll see this completed by the end of September and ready for use late Fall.”
He adds the downtown site is key.
“Downtown is a people place. Our waterfront is a people place,” he says. “Just look at what’s happened in the past 15 years around the museum. It’s grown out. Our downtown with people is safe and its successful.”
The area around the musuem now includes the multi-use courts, Rotary Splash Pad and a new playground, which is nearly complete.
The $1.8 million all-wheel park is being supported by $800,000 from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund and $100,000 from the Kiwanis Club of Nipissing.
