Ash borer infested trees being removed

About 25 trees at the North Bay Waterfront are being removed because they’re infested with the emerald ash borer.

The City of North Bay says the work is underway and should continue for the next few weeks.

“Remaining ash trees at the waterfront will be removed next year,” states a release. “First detected in Ontario in 2002, the emerald ash borer is an invasive insect from Asia that feeds on all species of ash tree. There is no known method to eradicate the wood-boring insect.”

The city says work to identify and inventory infected trees began several years ago with some infected trees, including at Lee Park, already removed.

Ahead of the removal, officials say the city’s Parks Department began planting trees about five years ago at the waterfront and other park areas.

A variety of species are being planted to to minimize any future invasive species-related risks, with more than 350 trees planted to date.
