Swiss Space Systems declared bankrupt, future with Canadore College uncertain

Swiss Space Systems has been declared bankrupt by a court in Switzerland, and that’s bad news for Canadore College. The two had forged a partnership in 2014. Then MP Jay Aspin announced funding for a partnership between Canadore Aviation and Swiss Space Systems. Canadore President George Burton says he learned of the bankruptcy at the same time as everyone else last week after reading media reports. Burton says he’s disappointed because they had a partnership, and they were looking forward to continuing to research as partners.

S3 was trying to make space more accessible by creating low-cost, reusable satellite launchers and it also intended to offer zero-gravity flights from North Bay to the general public in 2017. It would’ve seen the development of a composite materials facility and the launch of private sector sub-orbital satellites from the region. It isn’t all bad though, Burton says doing the project put North Bay on the map with a whole different aspect of aerospace as a testing and development site.
